At the center of it all, functioning as the tranquil heart of the hotel is a 4000 sq.m man-made lake with suites and hotel facilities developing naturally around it. The calming, transforming power of water flowing freely through the veins of the Olea All Suite Hotel cannot be understated. The complete absence of boundaries between the resort's suites and the communal spaces cultivates a unique sense of freedom and mindfulness resembling the deep state of relaxation one feels when floating.

3. Chi-Bu Riverside / Vietnam
Designed by o9 Design Studio, Chi-Bu Resort is located on the banks of the Ong Keo River, 30km outside of Saigon. The expansive 2000sqm site was designed to afford visitors space to decompress and regenerate - in lush surroundings a world away from the neighbouring urban zones. It encompasses seven bungalows overlooking the river and wild gardens, a riverfront restaurant/bar, and freshwater swimming pool. The bungalows are designed to harvest the abundant natural light and distribute it evenly around the rooms. Symbiosis with the verdant landscape is achieved through dismantling distinctions between exterior and interior spaces, generating a sense of boundlessness increasingly hard to come by in the breakneck verticality of the city.

5. Kondan The Retreat / India
The vision for Kondan Resort goes beyond the primary purpose of providing hospitality with modern amenities at a scenic location, and seeks to address concerns related to its social, regional and environmental context. Only half the 30 acre property has been developed, with the resort facilities being restricted to 16% of the area, 10% allotted for rainwater harvesting and power generation, and 23% reserved for reforestation. Its design was entrusted to Ruth Arad Design that created a model for development that is as much about cultural sustainability. Taking clues from traditional architecture, the built-form was evolved as a series of walls that define private and public spaces, and lend their peripheries to socio-economic activities reminiscent of historic citadels.

6. The Waterhouse at South Bund / China
Located by the new Cool Docks development on the South Bund District of Shanghai, the Waterhouse is a four-story, 19-room boutique hotel built into an existing three-story Japanese Army headquarters building from the 1930’s. The boutique hotel fronts the Huangpu River and looks across at the gleaming Pudong skyline. The architectural concept behind Neri&Hu’s renovation rests on a clear contrast of what is old and new. The original concrete building has been restored while new additions built over the existing structure were made using Cor-Ten steel, reflecting the industrial past of this working dock by the Huangpu River. Neri&Hu’s structural addition, on the fourth floor, resonates with the industrial nature of the ships which pass through the river, providing an analogous contextual link to both history and local culture.

7. Hotel Gfell / Italy
Hotel Gfell designed by noa* in Fiè allo Sciliar was extended by embedding it in the terrain, offering guests a spectacular view and the feeling of being emerged in nature. The outside of an old barn has preserved its traditional look thanks to careful restoration works, but the inside holds a surprise for visitors: it has been fully converted to host the hotel's reception, a lounge and breakfast hall within one large open- space area. While, inside, all the rooms take light from the large window overlooking the valley and they are structured seamlessly under the large wooden truss, which was partly rebuilt from scratch in line with local architectural tradition to restore all the feel of a typical South Tyrolean farmstead. Even the flooring, which makes an impression as a simple original cement screed, aims to reproduce the uneven surface area of the original barn (a specific treatment makes the surface waterproof and stain-resistant, however). In the middle is a spectacular column fireplace reinterpreting the alpine hearth and creating a visual crux around which the different functional spaces revolve.

9. Constance Moofushi Maldives / Maldives
The interiors of Constance Moofushi Maldives are designed by Studio MHNA, inspired by the surrounding landscape, the ocean’s endless shades of blue, the fine sandy beaches, and the lush vegetation. Each space is punctuated with exceptional craftsmanship, raw materials, and contemporary or vintage decorative objects. Using bold tones and audacious materials, Studio MHNA’s novel design is a signature concept of co-founders Marc Hertrich and Nicolas Adnet. With turquoise selected as Moofushi’s new signature colour, the palette is simple and pure and has been subtly infused throughout the rooms, on pillowcases and cushions. The walls are adorned with lush botanical motifs that seem almost sculpted directly into the material. The bedroom headboards – and most of the interior – is made of light wood, and the lampshades of rattan. Doors open onto a terrace that enhances the feeling of being at one with nature, a “fisherman’s hut” atmosphere in the most luxurious of suites.

10. Platan Vararok Vendeghaz / Hungary
The historic Platan guest house and restaurant that sits right next to the 14th-century royal castle of Tata (Hungary) went through a complete interior transformation led by Gold Key Award-winning designer Zoltan Varro. As part of the makeover and inspired by the design philosophy of repurposing heritage sites that can no longer perform their function, Zoltan Varro designed a contemporary landscape within the old moat grounds next to the property. He drew inspiration upon the natural beauty surrounding the property working in cooperation with local environmentalists and a wildlife artist in some elements of the project.

12. Silena / Italy

noa* network of architecture designed Silena - "the soulful hotel" at 1354 m above sea level on the sunny plateau of Valles, near Maranze (South Tyrol), a few steps from the ski lifts of the Gitschber Jochtal ski and alpine holiday area. The result of this mystical transformation is the 4-star-S Hotel “Silena". With its’ swamp- coloured, organically angular and integration into the landscape, it appears to be growing out of the unstable ground as a place of tranquillity, strength and soul, designed down to the smallest detail. The surrounding archaic nature as well as the southeast-Asian touch of the interior and the extensive accompanying program, which was specially requested by the client, were the decisive factors for the final outcome.

13. Volkshaus Basel Hotel / Switzerland

The Volkshaus Basel Hotel is designed for the individuality and needs of its guests creating an urban place of relaxation and modern hospitality in the middle of Basel’s liveliest district. A thick wall of storage space lining the corridors was used to enter the hotel rooms and to accommodate closets as well as toilets and showers. Both facilities are integrated into the stained black oak wood closet that runs the entire length of the room. To implement this idea, the shower has to jut out slightly, thus rhythmically structuring the corridor. Ceramic tiles, glazed black and dark green, underscore the feeling of being enveloped in these two spaces, which have been inserted into the closets with meticulous precision. Oval windows, like those in the brasserie and bar, afford a view into and above all out of the shower and toilet. In most of the rooms, the shower has been positioned to allow a view straight through the room and thus out of the window as well. The rest of the space is unobstructed, divided only by a central shaft clad in black glass, which also forms the back wall of the freestanding washbasin.

In South Tyrol, Saltaus, designed by  noa*,  Apfelhotel evokes the vintage charm of this historical hotel while creating an oasis for the senses and shared moments. The garden suites are constructed on the hotel’s East-facing side: three independent buildings with a total of 18 guest rooms across three floors. The saddle roofs absorb the architectural language of their surroundings and the façade blends tradition with modern aesthetics. The buildings’ outer shell has been deliberately kept dark in an ode to the traditional character of a barn house. Meanwhile, a wooden rhombus pattern - created as a transformation of classic wooden struts - gives the three buildings an unmistakably modern flair. The large windows offer a panoramic view of the idyllic landscape, and the feeling of living in and enjoying your own home. The attic gables are perfectly utilized to accommodate a sleeping gallery. An internal staircase leads from the suites up to the galleries, where step-shaped furniture also offers storage space. In every room, a unique atmosphere is created by meticulous attention to detail in design - with elements such as the metal banister purpose-built to wonderfully combine aesthetics and function.

19. Sacromonte Landscape Hotel / Uruguay

Projected by MAPA Architects, Sacromonte Landscape Hotel substitutes the concept of contiguous rooms with exclusive cabins scattered through the landscape of of southern Uruguay with the comfort and sophistication of urban hotels. A total of 13 cabins are disseminated over the Sacromonte topography, seeking the best locations. A winery with a restaurant set among the vineyards, a reception area with a wine store and a hilltop terrace for wine tasting put the finishing touches to the hotel facilities. Sacromonte exclusive rooms start in a factory in the metropolitan area of Montevideo. It is a speedy process of less than 10 weeks, after which they are transported over more than 200 km in a single day. Leaving the city behind, the rooms cease to exist as such and become landscape shelters. They are no longer objects but rather evolve into experiences. The modular metal structure, a blend of steel framing and light steel framing, gives preference to constructive simplicity and the efficient use of materials. Finishing is simple and expressive. Materials are used in harmony with their nature. In sharp contrast, the walls supporting the prefab modules are built onsite with local stones and take diverse organic shapes adapted to each placement. Circular pools, composing a new sensory experience of the landscape, complement them. The space is organized in a sequence of longitudinal layers of different thicknesses, between which daily life develops. The rear plane of the cabins is composed by piles of wood logs, reminiscent of woodpiles typical of lifestyles in natural settings.

Projected by Pablo Larroulet, the founder of LARROU ARQ, AKA Patagonia -is a cabins & lodge hotel in Puerto Natales, in southern Chile. The project consists of six modules (private double rooms with a bathroom) and one communal module for relaxing, meeting and cooking. The lenga tree is a species native to the region. It envelops the project, even the roof, protecting the structure from extreme weather conditions. The lenga has evolved to grow in places with poor soil, cold climates and strong winds, where no other species can usually adapt. The aging of the material is a key aspect of the project: achieving a fusion between the built environment and the landscape. Over time, architecture seeks to adapt to its environment, without competition or pretension, by becoming a part of it.

Projected by Liminal Studio, the site overlooks Great Oyster Bay as well as the dramatic granite Hazard Mountains, attracting travellers who wish to relax, explore the natural diversity of one of Tasmania’s oldest National Parks and admire the breathtaking beauty of Tasmania’s east coast. Floor to ceiling curved windows bring the outdoors in, emphasizing the experience of being immersed in nature. The positioning and interplay of the living room and bedroom wing form an embrace reminiscent of nearby bays, protecting the generous deck and offering privacy to the outdoor bath. The interiors of the Pavilions are immersed in the warmth of Tasmanian timbers. Offcuts of Tasmanian Oak timber clad the walls, Blackwood and the only plywood to be manufactured locally, totally enwrap the interiors to emphasise a completely Tasmanian experience. Using and showcasing utilitarian and natural materials in innovative ways have created a unique atmosphere befitting of its setting. An experiential highlight is the netted, hammock-like balustrades. Recognising the desire to retain the views that a standard balustrade would interrupt, Liminal devised the unique solution that provides a novel opportunity for relaxing and enjoying the incredible setting. Diagramatically the living, sleeping and bathing spaces are expressed as pods, connected by the flow of the circulation and deck, emulating the landscape curves of nearby Honeymoon Bay.

The cabanas are set in small clusters just steps from the beach among a gently sloping landscape of sand, palm trees and timber walkways. A grass thatch roof extending out over a private garden subtly shades the living and relaxation space, creating a retreat where guests can relax and spend time outdoors.
