Design Miami/ announces Gallery Lineup for 17th edition of Design Miami/ Basel

April 24, 2023

Running June 13 - 18, the special 17th edition of the Basel fair will present 24 galleries, each offering rare and unique displays of collectible design on the ground floor of the fair’s established location, the Basel Messeplatz.

“We are excited to return to Basel with a special edition of the fair, honouring many of the galleries who we have collaborated with for years. We hope the fair will serve as a valuable meeting point for gallerists, collectors and design enthusiasts from around the world to share and discover works presented by the foremost experts in the field of historic and contemporary design.”

Jen Roberts, CEO of Design Miami/

This year’s fair offers an array of highlights, with works spanning rare, historical objects to one-of-a-kind, contemporary designs and collaborations. Through this unique selection of works, the fair will offer a rare presentation of the international evolution of the history of collectible design. The spectrum of old and new will also allow audiences to chart the influence of historic works on the contemporary designs we see today, prompting a re-thinking of tradition through the study of design experts.

Swing-jib lamp, ca. 1950 by Jean Prouvé at Galerie Patrick Seguin

One standout historic presentation will come from Galerie Patrick Seguin (Paris). Since it was founded in 1989, the gallery may be credited with bringing a number of key French design talents to the international spotlight, with a particular specialisation in the work of Jean Prouvé. Alongside works by Prouvé, the gallery will present an array of 20th century masterpieces, including pieces by Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Jean Royère.

Angus Mill // Roly Poly Chair by Faye Toogood at Friedman Benda

Timothy Doyon // Shanghai Chair by Daniel Arsham at Friedman Benda

The influence of history on today’s masters of design will be highlighted by galleries including Friedman Benda (New York), offering a presentation of ‘iconic’ chairs by designers, artists, and architects who havemost influenced the field of contemporary design, with work from designers and artists spanning multiple generations and backgrounds, ranging from old masters, such as Ron Arad, Wendell Castle, Shiro Kuramata, Andrea Branzi, and Ettore Sottsass, to more recent practices, such as Paul Cocksedge, Joris Laarman, Samuel Ross, nendo, and Faye Toogood.

Francesco Barasciutti // Ascension, 2022 by Ritsue Mishima at Pierre Marie Giraud

Pierre Marie Giraud (Brussels) explores the influence of craft and tradition on contemporary creatives, with a selection of unique and exclusive contemporary decorative works of collectible design demonstrating master craftsmanship in ceramics and glass.

Similarly, Thomsen Gallery (New York) returns to Basel to present an overview of Japanese bamboo baskets made by the greatest bamboo artists of the modern through contemporary periods, complemented by Japanese ceramics and bronze objects and more.
