The team behind The Fat Radish New York and the managing partners of Basic Kitchen in Charleston are thrilled to announce the opening of The Fat Radish at 36 MLK Jr. Blvd. in Savannah, USA.

The Fat Radish team members include partners Natalie Freihon and Phil Wisner, executive chef Nick Wilber and director of pperations Michelle Watanabe. Also involved are former The Fat Radish NYC partner Ben Towill and wife Kate, who opened Basic Kitchen in Charleston and run Basic Projects, a design, development and consulting business that is overseeing the design of The Fat Radish Savannah space. Basic Projects is also responsible for the design and development of The Windrose Apartment Hotel in Savannah, which houses The Fat Radish on its ground floor.

“Savannah has this wonderful, eclectic energy that we find super inspiring. We have come to love the hospitality community here and are thrilled to contribute to it. The Fat Radish Savannah has been a long time coming and we could not be more excited to open our doors this summer.” - Natalie Freihon

After much deliberate thought and planning, The Fat Radish team chose Savannah for its creative spirit, rich culture and vibrant community, all key qualities of their restaurant ethos. The team has spent considerable time in the South and both Freihon and Wilber are putting down roots in Savannah. They feel the city embodies what The Fat Radish is all about – a friendly, unfussy, and creative neighborhood eatery with gracious hospitality and a focus on seasonal, farm-to-table cuisine.

The chef Nick Wilber cooks food highly seasonal, unfussy and balanced with an emphasis on local produce, heritage meats and grains. Since starting construction, Chef Wilber and his team have been dedicated to making connections and building a menu around local small production farmers, purveyors and producers whose values align with that of the restaurant. In addition to the food, The Fat Radish will offer a substantial beverage program with an emphasis on local beers and spirits, low waste production cocktails, and a wine list spotlighting winemakers dedicated to sustainable farming practices.

This renovation and addition unravels a chapter of ill-considered renovations to create an urban retreat for a young family on a remarkable site. By re-using more than half of the original structure and improving the home's environmental performance, the project also minimizes the 4000 SF home’s embodied carbon and ongoing carbon footprint. A front facade composed vertical and horizontal wood boards and slats, echoes the trellises and partitions, tying together the home’s public and private expressions and replacing an opaque street presence with a wood screen activated by shifting light from day to night.
